What is a First Day Cover ?
--When every new
stamp (or stationary item) is issued, most generally, just one post
office in the entire United States is designated as the one city that
can sell the new stamp design on that first day.
--A special postmark/cancellation that reads "First Day
of Issue" is prepared with that one date ONLY and ONLY for that
one post office.
--That postmark/cancellation is applied to the new stamp on
envelopes (or on a miniposter as shown on the right), known as covers.
--This special cancel certifies that each cover is a limited
edition which can never be duplicated at any later date.
--Each first day cover (FDC) is enormously educational and
an historic collectors item that will be treasured for generations!
--Some FDCs produced by PUGH CACHETS, INC.
have sold for up to 7000% of their original issue price.
